The student can identify the four key parts of a plant (roots, stem, leaves, and petals) and differentiate them on a visual representation.
Standards: Record observations on the growth of plant seeds (LS-E-A1) Express data in a variety of ways by constructing illustrations, graphs, charts, tables, concept maps, and oral and written explanations as appropriate (SI-E-A5) (SI-E-B4)
Learning Goal Two:
The student can explain the lifecycle of a plant and investigatethe steps required for a seed to become a plant.
Standards: Record observations on the growth of plant seeds (LS-E-A1) Ask questions about objects and events in the environment (e.g., plants, rocks, storms) (SI-E-A1) Pose questions that can be answered by using students’ own observations and scientific knowledge (SI-E-A1) Predict and anticipate possible outcomes (SI-E-A2) Use the five senses to describe observations (SI-E-A3)
Objectives
Learning Goal One:
TLW record observations of plant growth in class.
TLW identify parts of a plant and the function of each part.
TLW create visual displays of plants using a variety of ways, including illustrations, diagrams, etc.
Learning Goal Two:
TLW make predications of plant growth based on knowledge of plant lifecycle and parts.
TLW plant flowers in class, starting with a seed in soil.
TLW record observations of plant growth throughout the unit.
These learning goals are appropriate for my students in terms of development because there is opportunity for identification of components as well as a deeper understanding of the concept as a whole. I made sure that the lessons in this unit provided opportunity for hands on learning. These goals were created with the student's prior knowledge of the material in mind. Each of my students have different way of understanding content, therefore there are a variety of activities that contribute to my full week of lessons. The learning goals will be addressed through discussions, experiments, literature, and exploration centers to ensure that all of the needs and learning styles of my classroom are being recognized.
