With any planning that is done before hand, we as teachers must be prepared to make adjustments when things don’t go as expected. A huge aspect of adjustment for my lessons was the time crunch. I had to change a lot of the time I was able to use during my unit because there is not a designated time for science in our daily schuedule. I had to break up lessons throughout the day and during free time instead of during an allotted time for science. I also made a lot of time for discussions as well to ensure that students understanding of the content was growing and to create an environment where my studnets wanted to talk about it on their own. Because of this, the kids were able to understand about plants and not just see it through books or videos. I wanted to make it so that they could explore things first and make sure that they had time to do it. I wanted the students to be able to tell what they saw and share their knowledge about plants and what they had learned. I think that these adjustments contributed to student learning because it allowed students to share through collaboration and exploration. These changes helped me to meet the learning goals because it made is so that the children were learning the goals in depth and not just memorizing the parts of a plant. Along with making adjustments that fit the needs of my whole class, I had to make changes to my teaching to address the needs of my individual students as well. To do this, I integrated the material into our literacy stations and math tubs so that way I could focus in a small group setting what the students were struggling with and what they needed help with. My contextual factors showed me that I had different levels of knowledge in the classroom. I also used a KWL chart that showed me what the students already knew. I had various scores on my preassessemnts, therefore I knew a whole class setting would not work for every child. The individualized time allowed for the students who were more advanced to finish their work and move onto the next thing, and also allowed for the student that was falling behind to get more instruction to reach the learning goals. All of these factors helped me to make adjustments to my lesson and to better understand the needs of my students.
